    • They were good people. They were charitable, hardworking and honest. We kids spent a lot of time on their property and could walk in and out of their home across the paddock anytime we wished. My grandmother came from a very poor family that lived on the banks of the Murray River in Albury and always helped those doing it tough.

Gran baked the most delicious cakes and biscuits and everyone in West Albury was welcome to arrive at her home for morning or afternoon tea. My grandfather did not drink or smoke and worked his way up to providing a comfortable lifestyle for his family.

You may wish to amend my grandfather's name. His correct name was Roy Levar Haydon and he was the son of Walter Edward HAYDON and Laura Lavinia WILSON. He was born on 4 July 1900 and died at the age of 76 in 1976. I remember my grandparents well because we lived next door to them on their farm in Albury. I spent a lot of time with them from birth until his death in my 20s.
In my years of research I have not been able to find why he was given the second name of Levar.

Roy Haydon's butcher shop - Kiewa Street

My grandfather, Roy Haydon, was a butcher who owned a butcher shop in Kiewa Street during the 1930s. His butcher shop was behind the old Globe Hotel, which stood on the corner of Dean and Kiewa Street Albury. The site was where the Commodore Motel now is and was on the opposite side of the street to St Mathews Church in Kiewa Street. The photo below is my grandfather and the men who worked for him. My father Royce also worked for him from about 12 years of age through his teens until he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Defence Force.

I understand the reason my father didn't join the Army immediately the Second World War broke out was that his father kept him working in the butcher shop. My young teenage father did a lot of the cleaning up, errands and odd jobs and made deliveries of the meat orders to customers and family on his bike.

Before my grandfather bought the butcher shop a man named Mitchell owned it.

Hello Garry (sorry I called you Ivan)

George Warne B. 1806 was my great great great grandfather.

George Warne's daughter Emma Warne married John Embly Wilson in the Victorian goldfields around the Clunes, Bendigo and it was one of their many children, Laura Lavinia Wilson who married my grandfather's father - Walter Edward Haydon who was born in Enfield, Middlesex, England c. 1869 - died in Camberwell in 1950.

George Warne must have been a very clever hard-working fellow with a brain for business. He was a hat-maker in Greenwich, England before coming to Aust and when Emma Warne's mother died in England George Warne married the family's young servant girl, Harriet Pheasant Smith who was several years younger then he.

George and Harriet's children as well as Emma all immigrated to Victoria in 1859.

George then set about establishing a successful drapery store in Sandhurst/Bendigo. As you know George Warne died in Bendigo in 1888 at the age of 82.

You've done well. It was good to see George Warne's name and the result of all your research.

      Regards
      Elizabeth Haydon
