THE BURGLARY AT GRIFFITHS BROS.'
Before Mr. James Gordon and justices at the City Police Court on Wednesday morning, Arthur J. Cowan was charged, on remand, on the information of Henry Herbert Phillips, with having on August 19 and 26 broken into the shop of Messrs. Griffiths Bros., of Rundle-street, and stolen a quantity of tea to the value of £6 10/.
Herbert Henry Phillips said he was manager of Messrs. Griffiths Bros., tea, coffee, and cocoa merchants, of Rundle-street. On Saturday, August 17, he closed the warehouse securely at 1 o'clock. He was the last to leave, and did not return until 9 o'clock on the following Monday morning, when he found seven packages of tea missing. On Tuesday, August 27, he also found, on going to the warehouse, that three other packages had been removed since the previous evening. On August 19 he found a sheet of glass knocked out of a rear window of the premises quite large enough for an entrance to be effected. On August 27 he found a similar entrance had again been made. He knew the prisoner. He had been employed as a glut hand by the firm for about three weeks. The packages produced were the property of Messrs. Griffiths Bros., and had never been sold by any of the authorised travellers or salesmen.
Arthur Claridge Shorthose, employed by Messrs. Griffiths Bros. as a packer, identified three of the packages produced as having been packed by him on Saturday, August 17. They were left in the dispatch department on the ground floor. Upon returning on the following Monday he missed them, and similarly missed other parcels on August 27.
Evidence was tendered which showed that the prisoner had disposed of the packages by selling them to hotelkeepers at Adelaide and Port Adelaide.
Detective Byrne said he arrested the prisoner on August 30 on board the steamer Perth, bound for West Australia. When asked if he was going to West Australia prisoner said he was "trying to." Charged him with having broken into Griffiths Bros, on August 19 and 26 and having stolen
packages of tea.
The prisoner was committed for trial at the next Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court.
