    Notes
    • Martha’s stepbrother, William Saunders (jnr.) (c1820-1876) was married on the 19 March 1841 at Geelong by the Rev. Andrew Love to Mary Booth (c1825-1870) . Mary was the daughter of William Booth and Eleanor Wilson who were married on 23 August 1824 at St. John's Church of England, Parramatta, New South Wales. William Booth (c1793-1861?) came from Sussex, England, and had been sentenced to seven years prison for larceny at Kent Quarter Sessions in April 1822 and transported to New South Wales in 1823 per "Henry". Eleanor Wilson (c1805-1871?) came from Dunbarton, Scotland. She had been sentenced to seven years prison for larceny at Newcastle upon-Tyne Assizes in July 1822 and transported to New South Wales in 1823 per "Lord Sidmouth.
      ***************
Martha’s mother, Martha Saunders (nee Pulsford) died on 1 June 1851 at Timboon (now Camperdown) when Martha was only 10 years old. After a service at Christ Church, Geelong on 4 June was buried in the Saunders grave at the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong. The burial register describes her as, aged 51 years, and her husband as an overseer, of Timboon. Her burial is recorded as Martha SAUNDERS, not Steel. Also buried in the same site are William Saunders (d.25/6/1876), Mary Saunders, his wife (d.7/9/1870 aged 45), and James Saunders, William’s youngest brother (d.28/12/1844 aged 14). It is interesting to note that the memorial to Martha, which is shared with her son James, doesn’t indicate her surname (which was Steel at the time) but just states “MARTHA (mother of William and James). Died June 1st 1851 Aged 51 years”. Following Mary’s death in 1870, William Saunders remarried on 29 May 1872 to Fanny Mottram (c1840-1931), eldest daughter of Joseph Mottram (c1817-1892) of Point Henry and his wife Mary, nee Ward (c1816-1877).
