    1. [S143] Private e-mail, Geraldine James, (* As yet unproven).
We know for certain that John's son Henry married his cousin Susannah Hawes and and that her mother Hannah Hawes was born 1810 [Hannah's death certificate confirms this date of birth] was John's sister Hannah who married James Hawes. James and Hannah were distant cousins. It seems logical that Hannah would call one of her daughters after her mother.

    4. [S404] Letter to Albert HAWES, Florence K HAWES.
At the village of Long Crendon in Buckinghamshire James and Hannah Hawes lived, who were my grandparents and your great grandparents. I have heard of an old John Hawes who I seem to have a card, was the father of Hannah at the village of Long Crendon and Oakley appears to be inhabited chiefly by people of the name of Hawes. I think she cannot have changed her name when she married. They must have been born some time before 1810. They had five children, James born 1830, Emma born 1832, Robert about 1836, Emmanuel 1840, Suzanne 1852.

In 1847 or 8 they came to London, lived at Finchley for 8 or 9 months, when grandfather took a contract to supply horses and carts to cart the building materials etc. needed by Gorchen? the balance to build a mansion at Flimwell in Sussex, where they took a farm called Snowden and settled there for some years, from there they used to take farm produce into Hastings to sell, buy fish there and sell on the way back, chiefly by pony and cart and also at that time they used to use dogs to draw carts. When the boys got older, they started contracting for carrying the mail through the different villages about Sussex and Kent.

    5. [S404] Letter to Albert HAWES, Florence K HAWES.
I forgot to add that Hannah my grandmother died about 1870, after which Grandfather (James 1st) married again, someone of the name of Frances, who had a daughter about the same age as myself, then suicided, when Grandfather came to Hastings to live with us until about 1878 when he died from an accident, he used to keep an eye on our Katie but got injured by being caught between one of the horses and the stalls, otherwise he was very healthy.
