- [S404] Letter to Albert HAWES, Florence K HAWES.
The next I come to is our own direct branch Emanuel, my Father and your Grandfather. At the time he was 18 he took a contract under government for supplying horses and cart to deliver mails (letters) round about different parts of Sussex, he had, of course, not much education as he had no chance of attending school, at that time there was no compulsory education, if people liked to send their children to school they did so, if not, they did not bother so he only attended school for the few months they were in London on the way from Buckingham just before they came down to Sussex when he was about eight years old, but he did his best to learn to read and write by himself. I have heard him say that he used to buy copy book and teach himself to read and write in the stables after he put his horse and cart up before he went to bed, he used to deliver the mail through the night and rest in the day. He was living in Lewis when he met mother and they were married when she was 18 and he 21 lived in Lewes for a time, where your uncle Edwin Samuel was born in 1862, after that he took on a contract from Brighton to Chichester and moved to Chichester when your aunt Rose Susanna was born in 1866, but having such bad health there both he and mother they moved to Hastings in 1868 where he took up the business of wholesale fish merchant and combined same with the mail delivery used to drive the mail all night, get back to Hastings in time to go on the market purchasing fish. So, he had a very busy time of it. Both he and mother, during that time he lost his mother about 1869 but a little while before I (Florence Kate) was born just about that time 1871 mother's sister Kate came to live with us as a girl of 14 and was more like an elder sister to us all. Father was doing very well at that time and made up his mind to try to give us all a better education then we had a chance of receiving.
- [S404] Letter to Albert HAWES, Florence K HAWES.
During the latter part of the time that we lived at 12 Queen's Road, everything seemed to go wrong with business matter my mother was a great invalid and died in 1900, a year after father unfortunately had to file his petition in bankruptcy after a great struggle to pay all his creditors, he lost practically everything although if he had not been honourable enough to do so he might have managed to come out with enough to make authorities stair. He got a job as traveller to a wholesale firm in London and moved about Scotland and England.
