      Mysterious Disappearances
      FROM SYDNEY.
      WHERE HAVE THEY GONE ?
      ...

Miss Elizabeth M'William, who up to her arrival in Sydney and subsequent disappearance from the Hotel Metropole, Bent-street, on Monday, May 18 last, resided with her parents at Sunnyside Vineyard, Corowa, near Albury. She is one of a numerous family, and her parents are highly respectable and well-to-do people. Miss M'William, who arrived in Sydney under the protection of her brother in the early part of May, had but recently recovered from a very severe illness, and she never wholly got rid of the depression that was its outcome.
Miss M'William and her brother took rooms at the Metropole, and nothing, save the depression before alluded to, was remarked as strange in her manner during her stay there. She was seen to leave the building by one of the waitresses at 7 a.m. on May 18. Subsequent examination of her room showed that she had locked the door on the inside, and escaped by a window leading on to a verandah roof in the courtyard.
