SUDDEN DEATH OF AN OLD. BENDIGONIAN.
Another old Bendigo resident, Mrs. Elizabeth Cole, mother of Mrs. Pallett, of the Royal Hotel, Forest streel, passed away in a pain fully sudden manner on Saturday afternoon. The deceased, who had attained the venerable. age of 76; was living with Mrs. Pallett, on; Saturday afternoon about 2 o'clock she retired to her room, as was her custom, to have a sleep. About 6 o'clock in the evening Mrs Pallett sent her daughter Elsie to awaken the old lady. In a few minutes the little girl returned and said she was unable to wake her grandmother. Mrs Pallett then sent a servant, and after knocking at the door and getting no response the servant came back and advised Mrs. Pallett to go up to the rooms herself, as she was afraid something was wrong. Being now alarmed, Mrs. Pallett directed the groom to break the window of the bedroom, there being no other way of getting inside, as Mrs Cole always locked the door and window. The groom did as directed and unlocked the door. He then saw that the occupant of the room was dead, and told Mrs. Pallett, Dr. J. D. Boyd was brought in all haste, and on making a hurried examination he reported that death had taken place some hours. The deceased lady was held in very high esteem by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. She was born in Devonshire, and with her father and mother and other members of the family came to Australia in 1852. The family came straight on to Bendigo, where they stayed till 1864. They then took a trip home where they stayed for a couple of years. The deceased married at home, her husband being Mr. Robert Cole, who died 18 years ago. She returned to Bendigo in 1866, and she has lived here or in the immediate neighbourhood from then up till the time of her death, so that she can with some justice be called "a very old colonist. Latterly she stayed with Mrs. Pallett, who is her youngest daughter. She leaves a family of six all grownup. The funeral, which will be private according to the deceased’s express instructions, will take place this morning at 9 o’clock. The facts of the case were reported to the police, and Plain-clothes Constable Black arranged for a magisterial inquiry, which was held at the hotel yesterday afternoon by Mr. Webb. Evidence in support of the facts related above was given by Mrs. Pallett, Lizzie Harney and Charles Bowers. Dr. J, D Boyd deposed to having made a post-mortem examination of the body. He found that the heart had undergone fatty degeneration, which caused failure of the heart and consequently death, A verdict in accordance with the medical evidence was returned.
