There is no mistake about the Hopkins near its mouth being "a noble stream." The sand-bar which closes does not prevent the action of the tide. It is at the highest tides that one gets the best fishing. At the broad reach below Mr. Rolfe's a bridge crosses the Hopkins to what is known as the Coast-road. On the other side there is a new and neat hotel, the Anglers' Arms," where visitors can obtain every accommodation. I shall hereafter drive along the Coast road to Allansford, so we now retrace our route to "Mrs Nelson's," who keeps an angler's retreat known by every visitor who throws a line. My cicerone tells me that she is the most attentive and obliging hostess to be found in the Western district. There may be a dispute as to who is "king of the river," but there is no mistake that Mrs. Nelson is the queen. I am forced to inspect the cleanliness and comfort of Mrs. Nelson's establishment. Here the metropolitan angler gets a good bed, and a good square meal found for him at any time when he returns laden with spoil, and although flushed with triumph, weary in body. One can obtain everything wanted in the shape of boats and fishing gear at Mrs. Nelson's. The boat-house is tilled with every description of craft. From hence tourists and pleasure-seekers start up the broad Hopkins. I am surprised to see that with such facilities rowing is not a more popular pastime amongst young Warrnamboolians. There is only one outrigger out, and that belongs to Mr. Umphelby, of Sherwood, an old metropolitan champion oarsman. He has lent to this young man who is training to row at the Belfast regatta. With such a grand stream at their very doors, it seems strange that rowing here should have its principal exponent in a Melbourne gentle-man. On the sea, however, the native Mr. W. S. Helpman takes the palm as an amateur sailor and fisherman.
We do not start, however, from Mrs. Nelson's, but from hospitable Sherwood, higher up the river. - The drive thither is round the cemetery. "God's Acre," on the river bank, a is in beautiful situation, commanding a beautiful prospect. We are rather late, and make quick time along the main road till we enter the Sherwood-paddocks. The gnarled old forest trees here make the name given to this property by Mr. Hood quite applicable. In such a picturesque, charming retreat as this, with all appliances and means to add comfort to existence, who would change it for a residence and life in the metropolis? Not I, if I had the chance! The county of Notts contains no more lovely site than this. Of all English rivers the Dart alone can equal the Hopkins.
