OLD-TIME JOCKEY.
ANGLER'S DERBY PILOT.
The approaching Spring racing carnival at Flemington (writes the Allendale Cor- respondant of 'The Argus') has an unique interest for a district resident Mr Edwin J Redman grazier and live stock dealer, of Broomfield from the fact that he was the jockey who rode Angler to victory in the Derby Race of 1865 -- fifty years ago. At this period "Ted" Redman as he was fimiliarly known on the turf of the time, was the trusted jockey of the late Mr. Hurtle Fisher, who established the famous Maribyrnong stud. Redman, who is now 68 years of age first rode when he was 11 years of age, and his weight at scale was 3st 10lb. It is related by him that at this period the jockey was often relied upon to train his horse for his engagements, with-out the guidance and advice of an expert trainer. His record included the winning of many classic events and important handi-caps, but be mentions with regret his failure to win the Melbourne Cup although he made several attempts. After his retirement from the turf he followed the career of an overseer and boundary rider in the Western district. The keen knowledge and interest in land and live stock developed by the old sportsman induced his settlement in this district. He has retained all his enthusiasm for the turf. It is some years since he visited Flemington but will do so on this occasion as Sir Alexander Peacock, who is a perional friend, has encouraged him to undertake the trip.
