- [S535] The Methodist (Sydney, NSW : 1892 - 1954) .
A NOBLE BAND OF BROTHERS.
By Rev. John Watsford.
(We reprint from our Melbourne contemporary, The Spectator, the following account of a worthy old Methodist family. As there are some relatives and not a few acquaintances in New South Wales, the article will be of interest. — Eds.)
In the year 1842, soon after I commenced my work as a Methodist minister, there came to Parramatta, N.S.W., four young men who had just arrived from England.
I felt greatly interested in them, regarding them as just the sort of men our young country needed; and believing that they would make their mark in the land, and do good service in the cause of Christ. Since then I met. them often, and knew them well, and I questioned whether and other four men of one family in Australia have a brighter or better record than the brothers John, William, Joseph, and James Lowe.
All of them were for many years consistent members of the Wesleyan Methodist Church— two of them married in England, two in Australia, but all of them found wives who truly helped them, and did them good and not evil all the days of their life. All were thoroughly true, straightforward men in business, all lovers and promoters of peace in the Church, and witnesses and workers for the Lord Jesus.
Three of them are now in the glory land, and the fourth, in age and weakness, is watching and waiting for the coming of his Lord. Their children and grand-children are many, most of them are members of the Wesleyan Church ; two are Wesleyan ministers, and many of the others are found among our earnest workers.
John, the elder brother, lived long at Geelong, and was a local preacher, trustee, and steward in connection with the Yarra street Church. He was greatly respected and honoured by members of his own Church, and by all others. For some years he was a member of the Legislative Council of Victoria. He died in 1868. His daughters and some of his grandchildren are widely known and highly esteemed for their valuable work in the Church, especially among the young.
William, the second brother, entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1844. The greater part of his life he was stationed in Western Australia, where, by his earnest ministry, and as Chairman of the Synod, he served the Lord faithfully and well. He died in 1891.
James, the- fourth brother, has just gone, to his rest in heaven. For many years Geelong was his home, then for some time he lived at Lilydale, and for some years at Kew, and in every place his consistent Christian life won for him the love and confidence of all good men. He served the Church he so greatly loved, as a class leader, trustee, and steward. He highly valued and regularly attended the class meeting, and his bright experience was made a blessing to many. For some months his health was failing, but no one thought the end was so near. When the last sickness came he was firmly resting in Jesus ; no doubts or fears distressed his soul; he desired to depart and be with Christ, and after a few days the peaceful end came, and he was "crowned with life and love." The Rev. J. Lowe, of Sebastopol, is his son.
Joseph, the third brother, is living still. For many many years he resided at Fitzroy, and was a leader; trustee, and steward in the Brunswick Street Circuit. He and his excellent wife are greatly beloved by all our people. One of his sons, the Rev. D. Lowe, is a Wesleyan minister.
Some years after the sons had come to Australia, their aged father came, and most Methodists in Victoria knew or heard dear old Father Lowe, the noble sire of these worthy sons. We thank God for all such men in the Church. We most earnestly pray that as one after another finishes his course, and enters into the joy of his Lord, others may be raised up to fill their places, and carry on the blessed work which they did so well.
